Free Green Lecture Series Starts This Week at the Decatur Library

from the Oakhurst Community Garden: announcing a series of free courses on greener living

LIVING THE GREEN LIFE
All Year Long at the Decatur Library Starting this Wednesday!

Over the past few years, the interest in living a more green and sustainable lifestyle has grown tremendously. The Oakhurst Community Garden Project, the City of Decatur, and the DeKalb County Public Library are pleased to announce their collaboration on offering you an exciting FREE series of classes in 2012. Topics include gardening for food and for the unpredictable environment, how to make your home more efficient, composting, and using what you have to lead a healthy life. Look for seminars and workshops that speak to information that is timely and current as well as leaving with a full list of resources that can be found at your local library and online.

Events take place at the Decatur Library, 215 Sycamore Street Decatur, Georgia 30030.
The family friendly compost workshop takes place at the Oakhurst Community Garden Project, 435 Oakview Road, Decatur, GA 30030.

Learn basic design principles to enhance curb appeal and maximize your outdoor real estate. Lower fuel bills, eliminate toxic chemicals, manage water run-off and use yard waste to reduce weeding and make your plants grow better!

Drought and Rain Gardens - Prepare for Both!
Monday, April 16, 10-11am
Join Glynis Ward in an informative class on growing plants in extremes. Learn how to grow plants without a massive water bill. Channel water into productive places to grow while reducing erosion and clarifying the water.  Discover which plants do best is dry and wet conditions.

Compost Workshop for the Entire Family
Saturday, June 16, 9am -12pm

Call it weatherization, energy efficiency, or greening your home… we’ll call it just plain smart.

Recycling Crash Course
September 25th 7pm-8pm
Recycling is one of the first steps many people take when trying to green their lives.  Come learn about how the City of Decatur’s progressive Pay as You Throw system for landfill waste encourages recycling through economic incentives.  You’ll learn what you can and can’t recycle and what happens to the recyclable materials after they leave your home.

From the Kitchen to the Medicine Cabinet
Tuesday, October 23, 2012, 7-8pm
Heal Yourself!  Join one of Oakhurst Community Garden’s favorite teachers Charli Vogt, of Beyond the Measuring Cup, and meet some of the food, herbs, and spices in your kitchen that are health inducing.  Taste and learn about food that restores health and provides comfort. Charli Vogt, RN, MN, MPH, & herbalist has a private practice in Decatur and helps many to be healthy in mind, body and spirit.

Again, these classes are FREE and are open to everyone!
